Water Woes in Chennai City: A Preliminary Study

Sivapragasam P., Kavitha Balaraman

Abstract

This preliminary study examines water-related issues in Chennai. Chennai consistently grapples with water shortages during summers and floods every year. The study found encroachments on water bodies, unchecked urbanisation, excessive water extraction for commercial purposes, and insufficient environmental awareness, water rights, and lower participation contributed to water issues in Chennai city. The study underscores the need for robust governance systems supported by relevant legal instruments and effective public participation to alleviate water challenges in Chennai.
