Criminal Justice Social Work: Need of the Hour
Abstract
The criminal justice system (CJS) in India is beset with multiple issues
and problems. While the CJS has been plagued with pendency of cases,
structural deficiencies across the three pillars of the system (police,
prisons and courts), inadequate and sub-standard legal aid lawyers and
public prosecutors, and a backlog of vacant positions; the prisons are
overcrowded with undertrials, sub-human living conditions and poor
medical facilities
