This article reviews approaches used at reception centres to address gender-based

violence. The review starts by focusing on facilities available for women in international
settings, followed by Europe and Spain and finally narrowing down to the autonomous
community of Andalusia. The most important legislative change regarding gender-
based violence occurred in Spain with the passing of the Integral Law (Law 1/2004 of
28 December). The study provides an in-depth analysis of women victims of gender-
based violence who seek protection in shelters.
