This article conceptualises a new psychosocial model of social exclusion of the margin-
alised social groups in India including dalits, tribes, sexual minorities and older persons.
The model states that the discredited and stigma inducing identity of dalits and tribes
results in the experience of self-perceived and enacted stigmatisation in basic social
institutions such as families, communities and society. These result in the psychosocial
disability of individuals and social groups leading to the social isolation and exclusion
of families and communities. Finally, the article discusses the theoretical and practice
implications of the proposed model in detail.
