Women of Uttarakhand Fight for their Rights over Natural Resources

The people of Uttarakhand have been fighting for their rights over water, land and
forests since the early 20 th Century. Their survival and livelihoods depend on the sus-
tainable use and management of these natural resources. The article takes a look at
the protest movements spearheaded by women on three issues: dams, alcohol and
mining. This article is based on the author’s observations and interactions with the lead
actors in the villages. Primary data was collected through interviews and secondary
data through newspaper reports
