The Quest for Custodial Justice in India: Implications for Human Rights Education and Training
Abstract
This paper is a modest attempt to capture the journey of custodial justice in India. It is
focused on the in-depth account of custodial crimes in police custody and its impact
in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The findings revealed that poverty and social exclu-
sion factors were responsible for the victimisation of youth in police custody. Further,
the study found multi-dimensional vulnerabilities faced by the victims at the societal as
well as at the governmental level for accessing justice. The study suggests that there is
scope for human rights education and training of various professionals and volunteers.
