Geetanjoy Sahu, Mrinalini Paul, Vijay Dethe

Abstract

This article, based on a case study of Pachgaon in Chandrapur District of Maharashtra, analyses the impact of community forest rights recognition on the socioeconomic conditions of the villagers. The nature and extent of collective action, development of rules and regulations, decision-making power and capacities, involvement of weaker sections of the society, women participation, access to minor forest products, income from minor forest products, employment opportunities in forest related activities, and negotiation power of the community are parameters used to assess socioeconomic benefits. The results reveal a significant impact in the enhancement of livelihood of community members, consistent and inclusive participation of community members, especially women and the landless, and behavioural change among the forest dwellers in conservation and protection of forest resources.
