Deprivation, Resilience and Capabilities: An Analysis of Observations and Experiences in Mumbai
Abstract
This essay follows a 14-day study abroad course at the Tata Institute of Social Sci-
ences. Seeking to understand social work practice in Mumbai, this paper describes ob-
servations and experiences at three non-governmental organisations and undertakes
a capability approach (CA) theoretical analysis. The CA accounts for many features of
each case illustration, however, the CA does not fully explain the strengths of people
who rose above significant adversity. To reconcile these multiple complexities, a com-
bined approach to capabilities and resilience is offered.
