Religious Orientation and Positive Youth Development in the Southern Context

Sultan Khan

Abstract

There is a body of evidence that suggests that conformity to religion has a positive influence on the social-psychological and political life of individuals and communities. More specifically, it provides emotional comfort in times of distress and determines the ways in which individuals conform to the norms and values of society. Analysing the World Values Survey data base, this article argues that there are marked differences in upholding religious values between the Northern and Southern parts of the globe. In the Southern part, conformity to religion is much more pronounced and holds potential to serve as a safety net for marginalised youth through Positive Youth Development Programmes. The article provides insight into the importance of integrating religion in Positive Youth Development Programmes for possible therapeutic outcome and raising awareness amongst practitioners working with marginalised youth.
