Reflective Practice in Trans Affirmative Care
Abstract
Individuals with nonconforming gender identities and expressions experience various challenges in gaining access to healthcare and also experience significant health disparities. While there is evidence to suggest that gender affirming care greatly improves the mental health and overall wellbeing of transgender and gender nonconforming individuals, there has been limited research on reflective practice with this population. The present article highlights the importance of reflective practice using multiple case study method and elucidates how the author’s experiences, emotions and actions have shaped their understanding of the trans affirmative paradigm. The study emphasises the need to include reflective frameworks in the training of psychologists, so that the gaps in trans affirmative mental healthcare can be effectively filled.
